Records document projects undertaken by the International Studies Office largely while under the direction of Freeman Butts. Included are reports, correspondence, publications, and miscellaneous documents. These relate to Butts' tenure as Chief of the Teachers College Educational Mission to India, 1959; the Teachers College/U.S. Agency for International Development contract project for education in India, 1958-1967; Butts' survey of higher education in five Latin American countries, 1963, for the Council on Higher Education in American Republics (CHEAR); Basic Educational Development in Peru, early 1960s, a project conducted by Teachers College under a contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development; an Education and World Affairs (an organization located in New York City) project to assist Nigeria in education and human resource development, 1963-1967; and 23 teacher training and other education projects conducted with the Peace Corps, 1961-1969, in Africa (Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Guinea, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Tunisia, West Cameroon), Peru, and Chile. Miscellaneous international education projects are also documented.
